JD Edwards AI Strategy | A Practical Approach

Posted by Redfaire International

If you're an IT Manager in charge of JD Edwards ERP, the pressure to harness AI's power and avoid being left behind is immense. But the critical question remains for JDE IT teams: where do you even begin?

The hype surrounding AI can lead JDE IT managers to believe it's a silver bullet for every process bottleneck and problem. However, as Paul Houtkooper, VP of Product Development, wisely noted on the JDE Connection podcast, just because you could use AI to solve a challenge, doesn't always mean you should. You need to ask yourself, is this the most appropriate tool for the job? For instance, sometimes for process automation, familiar tools like Orchestrator might be quicker and easier to implement.

Cultivating an AI Mindset for JD Edwards: The Power of Continuous Learning

To figure out how AI can benefit your business you need more than just technical knowledge. Like any transformative technology project, discussions are best framed around people, processes, and platforms and require a comprehensive look at:

  • Business Strategy
  • Operations and value chain optimization
  • Customer engagement
  • Organizational Structure

This isn't a small undertaking and requires engagement with stakeholders across the business. You also need to get creative, as you shouldn't limit your thinking to making existing processes faster, cheaper, or better. Instead, consider how AI can fundamentally transform your business operations. There is, after all, little value in making soon-to-be-obsolete processes more efficient.

But, don't expect to see AI's full transformative power for your business overnight. Just as a marathon runner meticulously builds their strength and stamina, you'll need to strategically develop your team's skills and insights to unlock AI's true potential.  The good news is that with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle's comprehensive AI services, the time from idea to working prototype can be short. This helps teams to explore and invent.

Quick Wins: Building Confidence and Ensuring Compliance

Houtkooper also emphasizes the importance of securing quick wins for your AI and JDE projects. These early successes boost C-Suite confidence and enable your team to develop vital skills. Setting up a sandbox environment helps teams to go fast while also limiting the downside risk. Don't forget, it's not just about the technology; you also need to get governance and compliance policies and guard rails in place before rolling out AI across the enterprise. Undertaking these smaller projects also provides an early detection mechanism, revealing potential data challenges that, if left unaddressed, could negatively impact the efficacy of future AI deployments.

Choosing JDE AI Use Cases to Get Started

Last year, we ran a series of sessions focused on AI and JD Edwards, showcasing practical use cases such as:

  • An Approval Extension for JDE
  • Client interaction on a B2C website
  • Expense Management
  • Leveraging Generative AI to answer user questions from a curated knowledge base.

These might give you some ideas on where to start. Below is a taster of using a chatbot on a B2C website to improve customer engagement and sales. You can watch the rest of the examples and see our Q&A sessions here
