Data Decisions when Moving JDE to the Cloud – It’s a Bit like Moving House

Moving JD Edwards to the Cloud is like moving house. It seems daunting, but with preparation and the right help, stress and disruption can be minimized.

While you could never legitimately describe moving house as fun, there are positives. Moving gives us the opportunity to take stock. It forces us to assess what we have and identify things we no longer use or need - it might just be time say goodbye to that lava lamp.

A key area to think about for your Cloud Move is your ERP data. Just like moving house, you have a couple of options.

Sort before you move: If you have time, categorise, and clean your data before the move to the Cloud

  1. Delete data you no longer need, of course, ensuring that you are compliant with regulatory requirements.
  2. Optimise the data you keep. The goal is to have the optimal quantity of data in your production environment, no more and no less than is necessary. The rest should be moved to an archive environment.

This approach means you arrive in your ‘new home’ in the best possible shape with lean, clean ERP data. While this is the ideal scenario, particularly if you are also planning an upgrade to the latest version of JD Edwards and/or need to covert from DB2/MSQL to Oracle Database, it is not always a possibility.

Partially Reduce ERP Data before Cloud Migration
When a thorough data cleansing project is not an option prior to a JDE Cloud Migration, it is still worth looking at ways to partially reduce your data footprint before you move. In this situation, the Datawaire team reduces data volume by focusing on less complex tables and data models. Once the move is complete, the team then tackles more complex and sensitive data.

Migrate JDE Data ‘As Is’
As the name suggests, it is also possible to just lift and shift your data and then start the data cleansing project once you are in the Cloud. This is really only an option if data volumes are low, which in mature JDE clients is quite unusual.

Once in the Cloud - Keep Up the Good Work
And of course, start as you mean to go on. Now that you have cleaned out all that legacy data, it doesn’t take much effort to keep your ERP data in optimum shape. As part of our Cloud 9 JDE migration package, we deliver regular data “spring cleaning" as a service. It really is worth it. An effective data management policy is key to good governance and reducing organisational risk.
