IT always had a strategic role at Pladis as the company continually invests in deploying the most efficient tools to maintain its competitive advantage. Having 450+ JD Edwards users, the ERP solution is at the heart of Pladis’ IT strategy in Northern Europe where they use JDE to manage finance, manufacturing and distribution.
Due to considerable business growth, Pladis required experts in JD Edwards to help them with an E1 9.0 upgrade project and and a technical solution for handling a huge amount of business data.

Pladis is home to iconic brands Godiva, Verkade, McVitie’s and Ulker. These brands make sweet treats and savory treats, reaching 4 billion people worldwide. Pladis manufactures and distributes biscuits, wafer, cakes, chocolate, gum and candy categories. With annual revenues exceeding $5 billion, Pladis has 36 factories in 13 countries, employing 26,000 people.
In preparation for the E1 9.0 upgrade project, the technical team assessed the quantity of JDE application data. Since the previous upgrade, the business had grown substantially.
The team estimated that converting the 650GB of data could take up to three days, and this was seen as risky, inefficient and costly.
Pladis selected Datawaire Data Archiving from Redfaire International after a thorough selection procedure. It was chosen as a proven solution that is already in use at over 500 JD Edwards customers worldwide. Redfaire International also demonstrated their expertise and experience in ERP for the food industry.
The Pladis team considered it easier to use and less complex than other solutions evaluated.
When implementing the solution, specific attention was paid to achieving business buy-in. By communicating business benefits and reassuring users they would not lose any important data, project delay due to end-user resistance was avoided.
The project was executed in stages:
A simple user interface was developed to allow easy purging and archiving. The application data was reduced by over 50% to 230GB. Tens of millions of records were purged and archived. Data conversion as part of the upgrade project was completed in just one day. A huge success for Pladis and for our Data Management team.
